History and Info about the Rhodesian Ridgeback
The Rhodesian Ridgeback got its Start in Africa back in the 1800's . And the First Rhodesian Ridgeback was Registered with the South African Kennel Union (Now KUSA) in the 1920's. The Principal Breeds used to make the Rhodesian Ridgeback were Khoikoi, Greyhound, Bulldog, Pointer, Irish Terrier, Airdale Terrier, Collie and Deerhound. According to KUSA Northern Dogs were somewhat larger as thought Great Dane bred into them, while in the South a smaller more massive version perhaps more Boerboel was bred into them.
In November 1955, the American Kennel Club admitted the Rhodesian Ridgeback to its Stud Book as the 112th breed to be accorded AKC registration facilities. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is shown in the Hound Group (GR. II). The Rhodesian Ridgeback has both keen sight and a good nose. Possessing many of the characteristics generally associated with the hounds, the Ridgeback has a quiet, gentle temperament and rarely barks for no reason.
A Rhodesian Ridgeback is loving,loyal, smart, clean and easy to maintain. Raising a good family member requires energy and patience. There are no shortcuts. It takes time to properly raise a puppy and mold a young dog into a respected family member. Ridgebacks are "People" Dogs. They like to be where you are. Remember behaviors that are cute as a puppy may not be so funny when your Ridgeback is grown up and weighs 65 to 100 pounds.
Because Rhodesian Ridgebacks are a strong and intelligent dog, basic obedience training is a must, or they will not be the pleasurable companion you seek. Ridgebacks have been blessed with attributes of the many breeds that have gone into there making. That being said there can be many variables within the breed as to the various breeds that went into them. For this reason they can be used for many purposes.
