When to Get Fido Fixed

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are considered a large breed. I do not recommend neutering until the dog has reached the point that the long bone growth plates are done moving. Hip Dysplasia is something to consider and neutering too soon can cause rapid bone growth that has been known to cause bone cancer.

Males are Neutered at 1 1/2 years

Females are Spayed at 1 year after her 1st heat cycle and before her 2nd heat cycles depending on what age the female has her 1st heat cycle.

Neutering a female RR under the age of 6 months may cause aggression later on. Female RR's usually don't come into heat until about 1yr of age the earliest I have seen is 10 months of age. Spaying too young may also cause premature incontinence BECAUSE the dog is not done growing yet and everything will stretch.

Neutering a Male RR under the age of 6 months may cause shyness.  If there is an intact female in the house in heat it is best to Crate your male during this time.
