All Dog Food is Not Created Equal

When was the last time you read a dog food label? Probably not often if ever. Do you know if the dog food is already expired by the time you bought it? Do you know what it is preserved with? Do you know what the main source of protein is? I bet you assume that all dog food has meat in it.

Here is what you want to stay away from:

CORN(indigestible filler), SOY, WHEAT, WHITE RICE (Hot Carb), BY PRODUCTS(road kill), BHA and BHT (cancer causing preservatives), DYES, NATURAL FLAVORS, ETHOXYQUIN, AND MENADIONE SODIUM BIOSULFITE COMPLEX(synthetic vitamin K).

Beware of Dog Treats

At Pumaridge Rhodesian Ridgebacks we understand that sometimes you want to purchase and feed our pets items that we see at the store while we are shopping for our own families. Read the labels and do not feed your family or your pets foods or treats made in foreign countries like China.   Check this FDA link for recalls.  Also sign up for www.dogfoodadvisor.com email alerts they will give you alerts to any treats or dog food recalls

Bee and Ant Stings

During the Spring and Summer months its not uncommon for me to get a few frantic phone calls from Puppy Parents stating that their Puppy grabbed a Bee right out of the air and got stung in the mouth. OR the Pup laid on an Ant hill during his afternoon Siesta and got stung all over by Ants. Well some Ridgebacks have been known to be allergic to Bee stings so UNLESS the dog is having trouble breathing there is no need to take them to the Vet.
For Bee Stings: STEP #1 Check the dogs breathing. If it is breathing normally and not having any trouble or gasping thats good. You will probably notice Welts or Hives appearing all over the dogs skin. Its wise to keep some over the counter Benedryl capsules on hand.
Benedryl Dosage:
You want to give the dog 1 mg. for every pound of body weight very 8 hours OR up to 3 times in one single day.
- Dogs weighing 30 pounds and below – 10-30mg
- Between 30 and 50 pounds – 25-50mg
- 50 pounds and above – 50mg

Ant Bites: You will rarely get Hives or Welts appearing  on the dogs skin what you will notice is the dog the dog chewing on its foot or between the Toes and Scratching at tiny bumps. Possibly they will lift their paw and limp over to you. The best thing to do is keep Omi's Soothing Balm around because this has Tea Tree Oil in it that is blended with other Natural essential oils that takes the itching away and the Sting out. Totally Safe and Non-toxic if the dog licks it no worries. You can get Omi's HERE

**First Aid Care**

A few things to always have on hand.

**Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats.

Bach's Rescue Remedy-A homeopathic, helps support calm behavior in pets during stressful situations. Ideal for times such as injuries, travel, thunderstorms, or just going to the vet's office. I use this in combination with Lavender essential oil applied to chest and bridge of nose.

Digital Thermometer- A normal temperature is 101.5

Colloidal Silver -I could literally write a dissertation on Colloidal Silver. Colloidal Silver is the very first Anti-biotic ever made. It is an Anti-biotic, Anti-fungal, Anti-viral. Good for wounds, Pink eye, ear infections, sinus infections, and internally for sore throats and Flu.

Body Balance- Aloe Vera Juice with Sea Vegetables. I get mine from Life Force International. You can keep it unopened for up to a year and it will still be good. They also carry a powdered version. This is wonderful if you have a sick human or a sick dog. I had a dog with Garbage Gut that I added this to his water and within 4 days he was back to normal. It will give the system nutrients and flush it out at the same time.

 Omi's Derma-Hound-
This works on anything that you can use Neosporin on but it is much safer. It is TRUELY AWESOME on torn ears. Stops the bleeding quick! It is 100% Natural and will not hurt the dog if it is Licked.  I make this and use it on my dogs. It contains:
Extra Virgin Olive Oil: anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant (containing beta-carotene) and moisturizerrelieves minor pain.

Bee’s Wax from a Local Beekeeper- provides a film of protection against irritants while allowing the skin to breathe. Acts as an emollient & humectant drawing moisture to the skin and sealing it in. Natural source of Vitamin A.

Infused Calendula Oil (Marigold Herb) anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, brings quick, soothing relief to pain from insect bites and minor cuts and aids in wound healing.

Vitamin E Oil: a natural anti-oxidant preservative reinforces skin's moisturizing agents.

Lavendula Angustifolia (Lavender Essential Oil) anti-bacterial, contains anti-itch & powerful regenerative properties. Acts as a Central Nervous System sedative.

Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium Essential Oil)- anti-fungal used for Yeast overgrowth, also an effective Tick repellent.

Aniba Roseadora(Rosewood Essential Oil)- A cellular stimulant, aids in tissue regeneration. Has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Repells Ticks.

Ice Cubes and Bloat

Never give a over-heated dog ice cubes. Especially a Ridgeback. The cold from the ice causes the stomach muscles to constrict and twist over on itself. It can happen in a matter of minutes. The only warning you will have is the dog drooling and frothing at the mouth. If you find your self in this situation get the dog to the Vet NOW! Don't wait! It is literally a matter of life and death. The only way to save the dog is for the Vet to insert a tube down the throat to coax the stomach to flip back and if that fails, emergency surgery is the only option. Definitely not worth it taking the risk. Just something to add to the do not feed list

Vaccinosis

All my dogs are on the same Vaccination protocol has humans. My feeling is that dogs are very much like Humans in their Physiological makeup. We don't keep repeating our children's vaccinations after their childhood series. So why do we do it with our dogs? Dogs can become so toxic that months after a shot they can come down with some mystery ailment and we don't know what it is or where it came from; only to take them back to the Vet so he can put them on a really expensive drug that stabilizes the condition but doesn't cure it. ** This also cuts down on the lifespan of the animal. So why put the animal through it?? The Vets' just make money off it.

When interviewing Veterinarians ask them what their Vaccination Protocol is. Don't be afraid to say thank-you very much but I'll be moving on. After all if they kill your puppy by over-vaccinating them they won't admit that the vaccination was the cause. Unfortunately, you can't sue a Vet for malpractice. ALWAYS get a Vet that you trust but never be afraid to question them! Try to get a Vet that has experience with Ridgebacks.

Skunk Spray Remedy

If your dog comes home smelling like "Pepe La Peu"
the fastest way to get rid of it is the old fashioned method.

*1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
*1 quarter cup baking soda
*1 tablespoon Dawn dishwashing liquid – (The Original Blue)

Mix it well, sponge onto the sprayed parts of the dog being VERY careful around the eyes, nose and mouth. Leave on dog's coat up to 15 minutes and rinse well. You may need to make a second solution if the dog has a husky type coat.

Do NOT store the mixture in the refrigerator - it WILL explode!!
